West Katepwa Scenic Rentals
The property boasts some of the best views overlooking Katepwa Lake, featuring direct access to a private natural beach with partial sand areas, surrounded by stunning scenery and natural beauty. It consists of a mixture of manicured native prairie grassland and naturally forested areas. Over the years, what was once pastureland for cattle has been transformed to allow for the public to enjoy a unique camping experience, fully immersed in the benefits of nature in a private and peaceful setting. Our commitment to preserving the relatively untouched state of the land ensures stability for the ecosystem while having what is needed to make the experience enjoyable and comfortable. We aim to offer this outdoor rental experience to like-minded nature enthusiasts!
As this is the first year for our rentals, we have adjusted our rates to reflect the ongoing process of building and improving our facility. For 2026, we will be open from July 1st to October 31st for Tentzebo guests, and from July 8th onward (year-round) for the Cottage.
**Recent History of the Land**
The first Hockley to arrive in Saskatchewan/NWT was Thomas Hockley, who left the Hockley Valley in Ontario in 1881 to come out West. He was hired as the assistant farm instructor for the File Hills Indian Reservations and was fortunate enough to have shared a peace pipe smoking ritual with Sitting Bull.
After marrying, Thomas and his wife had several children born on the Pasqua reservation, but they were unable to attend the Presbyterian school set up for native children. Thus, Thomas purchased some land closer to Indian Head and built a small schoolhouse called Wide Awake School. This school served the local community for many many years, and today there is a memorial plaque commemorating it as you go towards Indian Head on Wide Awake Road. In the early years of the school, the Hockley's also welcomed the teachers into their home, and housed them until living arrangements could be made.
Eventually, the farm was passed down through generations, with Jim Hockley running it for several decades through the grain farming years until the grain land was sold in 2001. At that point, Jim and Nancy made the decision to keep the 'lake pasture', due to their passion for its natural beauty and serene lake setting. This property is now all of what remains of Hockley Farms. After Jim's passing in 2016, his wife Elaine made the decision to retain the "lake pasture" as our family farm, and to open it up to the public to have the ability to experience the unique setting.
We feel truly blessed to have the honour of stewardship of this unique parcel of land, ensuring that wildlife as well as guests, can enjoy it for decades to come. Hockley Farms Ltd. and West Katepwa Scenic Rentals Inc. are located within Treaty 4 Territory.
