About Us

Hockley Farms Ltd. is located at the NW end of Katepwa Lake, nestled in the Qu'appelle Valley in Saskatchewan, Canada. 

The property features lake access with beautiful scenery and wildlife throughout with a mixture of green space and forested areas. Over the years, what was once pastureland for cattle has been enhanced to allow for the public to be able to enjoy a unique camping experience away from the bustle of the city and and to take in the benefits of being immersed in everything nature provides. Wanting to ensure the stability of the eco-system and preserve the relatively "untouched" state of the land, we wanted to keep development at a minimum. Therefore, creating a sanctuary for the wildlife that was here long before us, as well as being able to offer this experience to other like-minded nature enthusiasts.  

Being this is the first year for rentals, we have adjusted our rates to reflect the ongoing process of building/improving the facility. For 2026 we will be open from July 1st to October 31st for Tentzebo Guests, and July 8 and on (year round) for the Cabin.

History of the "Land"

The first Hockley to arrive in Saskatchewan/NWT was Thomas Hockley.   He left the Hockley Valley in Ontario in 1881 to come out West.  He was hired as the assistant farm instructor for the File Hills Indian Reservations.  He was lucky enough to have sat down with Sitting Bull before he went back to the U.S.  The family story is that when he was the primary farm instructor, he was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to sit for a peace pipe smoking ritual with the Chief. We have possession of that peace pipe to this day, it's currently in safe keeping to be displayed at a later date.

Thomas married a few years later and they had several children born on the Pasqua reservation. Their children were unable to attend the Presbyterian school set up on the reserve for the native  children.  So Thomas decided to buy farm land closer to Indian Head.  He then built a small schoolhouse called the Wide Awake school on this land.   As well as being instrumental in the construction of the school, the teacher also boarded in their home.   When Thomas was done farming, it was taken over by his son Irvine and then by his children Jim, Nancy and Catherine.  

With the majority of the farm being sold in 2001, Jim and Nancy decided to keep the "lake pasture", as both were passionate about its natural beauty. This is now what remains of Hockley Farms.  

We are truly blessed to have the privilege of stewardship of this unique parcel of land. For future generations, wildlife, as well as the general public, to be able to enjoy for decades to come. Hockley Farms Ltd., and West Katepwa Scenic Rentals Inc. is located within Treaty 4 Territory.
